چکیده

Metal-free stars are assumed to evolve at constant mass because of the very low stellar winds. This leads to large CO-core mass at the end of the evolution, so primordial stars with an initial mass between 25 and 85 M are expected to end as direct black holes, the explosion energy being too weak to remove the full envelope. We show that when rotation enters into play, some mass is lost because the stars are prone to reach the critical velocity during the main sequence evolution. Contrarily to what happens in the case of very lowbut non zero-metallicity stars, the enrichment of the envelope by rotational mixing is very small and the total mass lost remains modest. The compactness of the primordial stars lead to a very inefficient transport of the angular momentum inside the star, so the profile of Ω(r) is close to Ω r = const. As the core contracts, the rotation rate increases, and the star ends its life with a fast spinning core. Such a configuration has been shown to modify substantially the dynamics of the explosion. Where one expected a weak explosion or none at all, rotation might boost the explosion energy and drive a robust supernova. This will have important consequences in the way primordial stars enriched the early Universe.

Self-Regulation of Star Formation in Low Metallicity Clouds

We investigate the process of self-regulated star formation via photodissociation of hydrogen molecules in low metallicity clouds. We evaluate the influence region’s scale of a massive star in low metallicity gas clouds whose temperatures are between 102 and 104 Kelvin. A single O star can photodissociate H2 in the whole of the host cloud. If metallicity is smaller than about 10−2.5 of the sola...

Star Formation History and Stellar Metallicity Distribution in a Λ Cold Dark Matter Universe

We study star formation history and stellar metallicity distribution in galaxies in a Λ cold dark matter universe using a hydrodynamic cosmological simulation. Our model predicts star formation rate declining in time exponentially from an early epoch to the present with the time-scale of 6 Gyr, which is consistent with the empirical Madau plot with modest dust obscuration. Star formation in L∗ ...

Physical Mechanism for the Intermediate Characteristic Stellar Mass in the Extremely Metal-poor Environments

If a significant fraction of metals is in dust, star-forming cores with metallicity higher than a critical value ∼ 10−6 − 10Z⊙ are able to fragment by dust cooling, thereby producing low-mass cores. Despite being above the critical metallicity, a metallicity range is found to exist around 10−5 −10Z⊙ where low-mass fragmentation is prohibited. In this range, three-body H2 formation starts at low...

Linking the Metallicity Distribution of Galactic Halo Stars to the Enrichment History of the Universe

We compare the metallicity distribution of Galactic Halo stars with 3D realizations of hierarchical galaxy formation. Outflows from dwarf galaxies enrich the intergalactic medium inhomogeneously, at a rate depending on the local galaxy density. Consequently, the first stars created in small early-forming galaxies are less metal-rich that the first stars formed in more massive galaxies which typ...

Carbon Star Populations in Systems with Different Metallicities : Statistics in Local Group Galaxies

We present evolutionary population synthesis models for the study of the cool and luminous intermediate age stellar populations in resolved galaxies with particular emphasis on carbon star populations. We study the effects of the star formation history, the age and the metallicity on the populations of intermediate mass stars. In the case of instantaneous bursts, we confirm that lower metallici...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
